Recently I was going through the categories on my site and outlining which ones I needed to fill in with posts. As I started to plan to fill up a content marketing category, an intuitive voice came through: “You don’t want to write about content marketing.”
Similarly, awhile back, I wrote a guest post on more of the technical side of writing. I got some positive comments and others knocking it down. The negative ones stung. My gut response was to go into a shame response. That quickly shifted when that same higher part of myself reminded me: “you’ve never been interested in writing that kind of content. The post was out of alignment.”
However, I wrote the post and attempted to fill in the content marketing category because I felt like I should.
When I strip away the “shoulds,” what lights me up, in terms of my own writing, is exploring the the deeply human, as well as spiritual and innately magical parts of the creative process. Maybe it’s because half my chart is in Scorpio (with a north node in Taurus), that I become creatively alive going below the surface, holding the questions of how to navigate self-expression, and how to engage the dance between the inner and outer worlds.
Joseph Campbell said, “follow your bliss.” Although this is a catchy sentiment, it’s a radical and life-changing idea when we really sink into what that means.
What would this look like in your life if you really took it seriously?
Ultimately, there’s so much noise pointing us in various directions that we can lose sight of our own path–and often times forget that we even have one.
Of course, there’s a certain amount of trial and error that goes into whatever it is we’re creating. That’s part of the magic of being a creative being in the physical world. We don’t always know what in or out of alignment until we try.
The beautiful part is as we try, we also become more fluent in our intuition.
We become clearer about what to hold onto and what to let go of. We learn to trust, in deeper and deeper ways, the voice that directs our inner compass.
Of course, there are things we can’t always let go of the to-do list. Or there are times when we have to create content that’s not alive — but that’s connected to a bigger picture that is. That’s okay, find the places where you can cultivate more joy. Where you can create in your unique expression. Where you can write about what you want.
At the end of the day, what keeps us going is following the energy of what lights us up. If it’s not there, don’t do it. If you like writing in a certain style, follow that. If you have a creative impulse, act on it.
Regardless of what you feel you should be doing.
When we write from a place of alignment our readers feel it. Momentum is easier to maintain. We become more confident in who we are and the unique gifts we’re here to express in the world.
It’s not easy to trust our intuition. When I was trying to get myself to create content that didn’t have energy for me, and got the hit to let it go, I ran through all the reasons why I should persist anyways. However, my intuition created an opening. I could feel the freedom in letting go. It’s not to say those things won’t hold energy at some point. I want to leave space for that. But right now they don’t and that’s okay.If your day is full of 'shoulds' it's time to pause and reassess. Click To Tweet
